What is JEE Main?

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination and is an entrance examination students need to qualify to get admission into undergraduate programs in prestigious engineering colleges in India.

Almost 11 Lakh students appeared for the JEE Main exam in the year 2021.

 

Organizer: It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

JEE Main Eligibility:
  • Qualification: Students who have either passed or are appearing for their 12th Boards are eligible for JEE (Main). A student studying in the 12th standard in the 2021-22 session can appear for JEE (Main) in 2022 and 2023.
  • Nationality: The JEE Main examination is open for all Indian citizens. Foreign national candidates as well as NRIs, PIOs, OCIs can also apply.
Attempts: 3 Consecutive Years

Exam Frequency: Until 2020, JEE (Main) was conducted in 2 phases, i.e., twice a year. However, JEE Main 2021 was held in 4 phases so that the students had four opportunities to pass the examination. Again, in the year 2022, it has been revised and shall be conducted only twice.

  • What is the difference between IIT and JEE?
    JEE (Main and Advanced) are the exams students must qualify to get admission into IIT.
    JEE: JEE stands for Joint Entrance Exam conducted for admission to undergraduate programs in engineering colleges in India. It is a national exam organized every year and constitutes two different exams: JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
    IIT: IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology and is one of the prestigious engineering colleges in India. Students must pass both JEE Main and Advanced to get admission into one of the IITs and other prestigious engineering colleges.
  • Do I need to take a gap year to prepare for JEE Main?
    No, you need not take a gap year in your senior secondary education to prepare for JEE (Main). The JEE (Main) and 11th-12th Science syllabus coincide on many levels. Any learner preparing for JEE (Main) is already preparing to appear for their CBSE boards. Instead of taking a gap year, students start learning early to ensure a deeper understanding of the basics.   • What is the mode of examination?
    The examination is conducted online at JEE exam centers.
  • Is there a minimum aggregate requirement for 12th students applying for JEE Main?
    The minimum aggregate requirement or restriction to apply for JEE Main is 75%.
  • Is there a restriction on the number of attempts for JEE Main?
    Yes. Students can apply for JEE Main for three consecutive years starting from the year they appear for their 12th finals. This would give them a total of 6 attempts in the exam since JEE is held twice a year.
  • I am currently in the 12th standard. When can I appear for JEE Main?
    Candidates appearing for the 12th exams in 2022 can appear for JEE Main in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Whereas, if your 12th finals will be held in 2023, you can appear for JEE Main in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
  • Is NCERT sufficient to crack JEE Main examination?
    While NCERT is good for JEE Main examination preparation, students are recommended to strengthen their learnings by referring to study material provided by their coaching and other books for JEE Main prep as suggested by their teachers.
